LITHUANIA – ROMANIA 1-2 (UEFA NATIONS LEAGUE)

Every Lithuanian I met who asked me where I was from and for what purpose in Kaunas (obviously I told them I came for the Romania match) answered me in the same tone: “Ah, for the match, you win for sure, Lithuania is very weak and lost against all the teams.” As proof, about 1500 Lithuanians came to the Daraius ir Girenas stadium for the match. No interest, although the event was aggressively promoted in the city, even in the public transport ran information about this match.

Daraius ir Girenas is a multi-functional stadium, it can accommodate 15,000 spectators for football matches and athletics competitions and up to 55,000 for concerts. It is the largest stadium in the country, it was built in 1924 and rebuilt in 2022.

You don’t come to Kaunas just for a football match, there is a lot to see in 2-3 days. I wanted to start with the Sports Museum, but I didn’t find it open, so I walked around the center and stopped first at Kaunas Castle. This after a wonderful 3 km walk on the banks of the Neris River. What is interesting is that the city is located at the confluence of two of the largest rivers that run through Lithuania, Nemunas and Neris.

I stopped for a coffee in the central square, picked up some magnets for friends (well, what can you bring from a city you’ve never seen before but magnets?), then stopped by the Atomic Bunker Museum , then the airport destination. I took a €13 Bolt from the center, because there was no time for the €1 bus that I told you about yesterday.

In conclusion, Kaunas is a city on the list for a city break of at least 3 nights.

About the match, Romania won in Lithuania 2-1, goals scored by Răzvan Marin from penalty and Denis Drăguș. Mircea Lucescu has four consecutive victories now and surpasses Anghel Iordănescu rergarding wins in a row.

The end was unexpected, the Romanian supporters who came to Kaunas called the captain Nicolae Stanciu for a talk, reproaching him for not coming close to them for the classic chants of joy, just like the Lithuanians did with their supporters.
